Meet Mark
About this story: We have a diverse group of guests at the Torres Community Shelter, our emergency shelter for adults and seniors (over the age of 60). We want you to meet them, to hear their stories, to understand the impact we can make together.
Mark has lived in Chico for 40 years and became homeless for the first time at 62 years old. He lost his rental housing when his landlord’s family moved in, and found it impossible to find anywhere to call home in today’s challenging housing market.
That’s when he turned to True North Housing Alliance. While in our programs at the Torres Community Shelter, Mark, a senior who uses a wheelchair, has maintained his sobriety. He is working with his True North case manager to find low-income housing that he can afford with his Social Security benefits income.
“When you lose everything and come here, it’s very overwhelming,” Mark said. “The Torres Shelter holds you accountable. The Torres Shelter wants to put you on a road to recovery. It was the only place in town I went to that would help. Our case managers try to help the best they can and they’re all nice people. People need help. They need to be understood”
