Chico State Rapid Re-housing

A comprehensive program for unhoused students

about

True North Housing Alliance has been working closely with our partners at the Chico State Basic Needs Project since 2020 to assist Chico State students who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness in securing safe, affordable, sustainable, permanent housing.

Services Provided

This comprehensive program includes:

  • Short-term (1-14 day) emergency shelter and temporary housing

  • Transitional, rapid re-housing and permanent housing assistance

  • Basic needs referral and homeless prevention services

  • Off campus housing and rental market advising

  • Housing navigation

Students who are experiencing housing insecurity and homelessness can receive assistance with finding housing, negotiating with property owners, move-in costs, security deposits, rental payments, lease and co-signing advising, utilities, and Internet referrals.

Additionally, students are connected to on- and off-campus resources—such as academic advising, financial literacy, career counseling and other student services—to provide wraparound services to support student academic success and graduation.

impact

The Basic Needs program significantly helped me by giving me housing in Chico to attend my required in-person classes. My case manager, Emma, was more than a staff member but a friend that I knew I could call on for support and guidance through navigating the university system and the emotions that come with that. During my finals week, I had major transportation problems and the Chico State Basic Needs Project once again helped me so that I could successfully complete my classes. I am proud to say that I made the Dean's List Fall 2021, and graduated Spring 2022. Thank you so much.

History

Chico State Basic Needs introduced its first emergency housing services in 2016. Since that time, the University has sheltered more than 175 students experiencing homelessness primarily through University Housing, True North, Chico Housing Action Team and housing providers.
