Meet Angela
About this story: We have a diverse group of guests at the Torres Community Shelter, our emergency shelter for adults and seniors (over the age of 60). We want you to meet them, to hear their stories, to understand the impact we can make together.
Angela entered our programs at True North Housing Alliance about one year ago, and we are so proud of how far she has come. She just turned 46 (happy birthday!), and for most of her life, she struggled with addiction.
Angela has been through so much in her life. She is a domestic violence survivor and a sexual assault survivor. She has experienced significant health issues—she suffers from seizures, and while staying at our Torres Community Shelter, she was diagnosed with cancer and went through treatment.
When Angela was feeling really sick and wanted to give up, she would reach out to her case manager and True North Housing Alliance staff members. They cheered her on and kept her going, she said.
“I never thought I’d live to be 46 years old because my addiction was so bad. True North Housing Alliance’s staff are a big family to me. Without them, I couldn’t have gotten through it all. They were my shoulder to cry on. It’s not just one individual that helps you. They encourage you. They help you and they don’t give up on you.”
