Our Mission This Holiday Season

A message from our Executive Director

Taylor Storey stands in front of a green bush and smiles.

When I began working as executive director of True North Housing Alliance, I was shocked at the amount of seniors who were staying at the Torres Community Shelter. Every day as I walk through our doors, I say hello to seniors we care for. So many live with chronic illness or face other difficult health challenges, and they travel through our halls with the assistance of a walker or wheelchair.

There is good and bad news related to this. Our hardworking case managers have made a difference in changing their lives, and we’ve seen tremendous success helping seniors secure safe, affordable housing. Last year we housed nearly 300 people and sheltered nearly 700, for example.

But the reality is that senior citizens are the fastest growing population of adults experiencing homelessness nationally. This has impacted us locally, too, and we are struggling to keep up. A total of 35% of our shelter guests are older adults. They have specialized needs that we need to address so that we can provide better care for them.

That’s why we need your help this holiday season. Will you give a gift of $25 today to help us provide critical care for our senior guests? Please donate to our special campaign, Home Again, today: https://give.classy.org/homeagain

We’ve received an incredibly generous donation from the Emil & Leonora Steifvater Endowment Fund at the North Valley Community Foundation, and they are going to match every dollar we raise through the rest of this year up to $50,000. That means that if we reach our goal, we can collectively raise $100,000 as a community to help seniors in need!

That is enough to provide three hot meals a day for every senior at the shelter this coming year. It is enough to upgrade our showers and improve accessibility at our shelter, a critical need we are facing. It is enough to provide transportation assistance for medical appointments. It is enough to get new bedding, hygiene supplies and more.

If you cannot give right now or if you have already made your contribution today, please consider helping us by spreading the word about our Home Again campaign by sharing it with your friends, family and coworkers.

Our mission is to help people move forward and out of homelessness with compassion, dignity and accountability. We can’t think of a better way to channel that mission right now than to dedicate this holiday season to raising money to help seniors in need. With your support, we know that we can help unhoused seniors find their way home again!

Thank you,

Taylor Storey
