A Safe Haven

When Alma and her four children had nowhere to go, she turned to True North Housing Alliance. We made sure that her family was safe and didn’t have to spend even one night on the streets.

Alma has always been an independent, hardworking person, but her former marriage resulted in her losing everything. Alma, a domestic violence survivor, fled, afraid for her life and the safety of her children.

She stayed with family temporarily, but that situation fell through, and Alma found herself in a place she’d never imagined: homeless.

She spent a few days staying with friends, but knew she needed to find something fast.

That’s when True North Housing Alliance and our community partners triaged to provide Alma and her children with the support they needed. Butte-Glenn 2-1-1 connected Alma to the Butte County Department of Employment and Social Services, a key partner for our Aurora North Bridge Housing program for families.

Alma and her children moved into our Aurora North home right away. With the help and support of her Butte County and True North Housing Alliance case managers, Alma worked hard on her family’s next steps.

The encouragement she received from True North Housing Alliance Case Manager Joaquin made a huge impact, Alma told us.

“I was so down,” she said. “He basically re-boosted my self-esteem and the strength I knew I had within. I told myself, ‘I can do this. I gotta get back on my feet.’”

Her family moved into their new place just before the holidays, and they’re really happy, Alma said.

“The Aurora North house has been such a huge blessing for me and my family. Because of True North Housing Alliance, we are here in our own home and we’re soaking everything in and enjoying every moment. We’re so thankful and grateful for everything.”

Aurora North became her refuge and safe haven when she had no other options, Alma said.

“When doors close on you, there’s this one organization that is willing to receive you with open arms,” she said.

That’s True North Housing Alliance.

Mothers in Need

At the close of the 2020 calendar year, True North Housing Alliance’s Aurora North Bridge Housing Program for families served 82 individuals and helped 29 people, like Alma and her children, secure permanent housing. This is 35 percent of the overall population.

Did you know that according to the National Alliance to End Homelessness 10 percent is considered a “good” housing outcome?

While we are proud of our successes, there are still many families in need of our help.

Your support today allows us to continue our vital work to keep families safe, stable and housed.
